Silvia Alves Nishioka, PhD

Senior Clinical Psychologist

Silvia Alves Nishioka received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University, where she also received her Masters in Clinical Psychology. As a psychologist in Brazil, Silvia worked with clients experiencing various stressors including chronic medical conditions, behavioral and emotional dysregulation, and academic difficulties. Since moving to the U.S., Silvia has worked with children, adolescents, and adults to address depression, anxiety, and behavioral issues through CBT, mindfulness practices, parent management, and culturally-sensitive interventions. Her doctoral internship at Jacobi Medical Center focused on treating and advocating for children and families exposed to complex trauma. She has experience working with individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders including Autism Spectrum, learning problems, and ADHD.

Her research focuses on improving interventions for children, adolescents, and families from diverse backgrounds. Silvia has worked with Dr. Kleinman and Dr. Kerner conducting research on a social and emotional learning program. She has also worked with Dr. Klosk at the Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center outpatient clinic providing individual therapy and group evidence-based interventions for children and families.
